2025 is here, we're closer to 2050 than 2000

2025

Well, we're now closer to 2050 than to 2000, as one of my favorite streamers on Twitch (who goes by the nickname Quickybaby) was pointing out earlier today in his stream.

I remember when the year 2000 was a distant point in time and we were all counting how old we'd be when that milestone would be reached. I computed that number would be 38 for me, and that seemed so far away! Now, I guess I have to compute when I'll have lived in the 21st century longer that I've lived in the 20th century (around year 2038 or so).

So much has changed since I was young: no one had a computer back then, and now, everyone has many of them -- in their phones, in their watches, in their TVs, in their cars. Cars are no longer necessarily equiped with combustion engines (we've been driving an Electric Vehicle since May 2024) and winters aren't as cold as they used to be... though my grandparents would probably have said the same, wouldn't they?

The big surprise in the past couple of years has been the quality of Generative AI. I've always been pretty good at seeing technological innovations coming, but I must admit that this one took me by surprise. It's gotten pretty good pretty fast, but it's still not really intelligence: I've asked one of the popular AI chatbots recently /"who scored the Montreal Canadiens two goals tonight"/ and it confidently answered with the names of two (likely) Canadiens players -- the only problem was that these two players scored goals in a recent Montreal Canadiens game, but not on the day I asked the question! It ignored, disregarded, or misinterpreted the "tonight" part of my question... rendering its answer completely useless. Oh well, still needs more work I guess.

So, back to 2025: it might be a year of big changes. Let's all stay on our toes and watch out for what will go on.
